You can expand a file to full screen and type changes yourself, highlight text to ask questions about it, or ask Gemini to refine the file for you.

This is a feature launch, not a new model. It builds on file generation, which Google added to the Gemini app in April 2026. The difference now is that the file no longer ends at the download button. You can see it and work on it before it leaves the chat.

Below we explain what changed, how it works according to Google’s own pages, which formats and platforms are covered, what it costs, how it compares with ChatGPT canvas, Claude file creation and Microsoft Copilot, and what it means for a WordPress site or a business in the MENA region.

What changed in the Gemini app

Before this update, Gemini could already create files from a prompt. Since April 2026 the app could produce a PDF, a Word document, an Excel sheet or a Google Doc, and you could download it or export it to Drive. The new step is preview and editing inside the chat.

Preview in the chat: the generated file appears in the conversation, so you can check it before exporting.

Full screen editing: you can expand the file and type edits directly.

Highlight and ask: you can select a part of the file and ask a question about it, or ask Gemini to change that part, including text or visuals.

Refine with prompts: you can keep asking Gemini to improve the whole file.

Google’s example is a PDF study guide made from uploaded handwritten lecture notes, which you then edit by hand, highlight sections for Gemini to rewrite, and ask follow-up questions about.

Supported formats, web and mobile

The platform split is the most important detail in the announcement. Google says:

PDF: preview and editing work on both the web and mobile.

Web only: Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code.

So if you work mostly from your phone, today you get in-chat editing for PDFs only. For a spreadsheet or a slide deck, you need gemini.google.com on a computer.

For generation, the formats Google listed in April 2026 still apply. The Workspace Updates blog lists Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, PDF, Microsoft Word (.docx), Microsoft Excel (.xlsx), CSV, LaTeX (.tex), plain text (.txt), Rich Text Format (.rtf) and Markdown (.md). Note that the October announcement does not list .docx or .xlsx among the formats you can preview and edit in the chat. You can still generate them, but Google has not said they get the new editor.

Export, download and Drive

According to the Gemini Help Center, for most file formats you can download the file directly to your device or export it to Google Drive. The Canvas help page adds export options from the Share and export menu: Export to Docs for text, Export to Slides for slides, slides as a PDF, and Copy contents. Python code can be exported to Colab.

One documented limit is worth knowing: Google’s Workspace Updates post says Gemini currently generates one file per prompt. If you need a proposal and a price sheet, plan two requests.

How it works, step by step

Google has not published a separate help article for the new editor yet, so these steps combine the announcement with the existing Help Center pages on file generation and Canvas:

Sign in to the Gemini app. Signed-out use does not include file upload.

Ask for a specific file type in your prompt, for example a doc, a spreadsheet or a PDF. Gemini may also offer to format the result as a file.

Optionally upload source material, such as notes, a brief or an existing file.

Review the generated file in the chat preview.

Expand to full screen and type edits directly, or highlight a section and ask Gemini to change it or explain it.

When you are happy, download the file or export it to Drive, Docs or Slides where the format allows.

Plans, prices and countries

Google says the new capabilities are available to all users in all languages where the Gemini app is available. There is no paid plan requirement in the announcement. The April file generation post also said the feature was available to all Gemini app users globally.

Languages: the Help Center lists more than 70 languages for the Gemini web app, and Arabic is one of them.

Countries: the web app covers over 230 countries and territories, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Jordan and Morocco. The mobile app may have different availability.

Workspace accounts: for file generation, Google said it is available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal accounts signed in to the Gemini app, with no separate admin control. The October post does not mention Workspace separately.

Usage limits: Gemini uses compute-based limits that depend on prompt complexity, model, features and chat length. The limit refreshes every 5 hours until you hit a weekly limit.

Paid plans raise those limits. On Google’s US subscriptions page, Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month with 2x higher usage than Free, Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month with 4x higher usage, and Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99 a month. Prices differ by country, so check the Google One plans page in your local currency. None of these pages lists a specific quota for file editing.

Pros and cons

Pros

You can fix a file before exporting it, instead of regenerating it for every small change.

Highlight-and-ask makes targeted edits easier than describing a section in words.

It works across many formats, from PDFs to code.

Available on the free tier and in Arabic-speaking markets, according to Google.

Close ties to Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive if your team already uses Google Workspace.

Cons

Mobile editing is limited to PDFs.

One file per prompt.

Google does not list Word or Excel files among the editable formats in this update.

No published per-file size or editing quota, only general compute-based limits.

Generated content still needs a human check, especially numbers and prices.

How it compares with ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot

All three rivals let you create documents from chat, but each one handles editing differently. The points below come only from each company’s official pages.

ChatGPT canvas: OpenAI describes canvas as a separate window where you edit text or code directly, highlight sections for focused feedback, use shortcuts such as adjusting length or reading level, and restore earlier versions. OpenAI later announced on its official X account that text in canvas can be downloaded as PDF, docx or Markdown.

Claude file creation: Anthropic says Claude can create Excel, PowerPoint, Word and PDF files, which you can download or save to Google Drive. It is available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans on web, desktop and mobile. The maximum file size is 30MB per file, and file creation uses more of your plan limit than normal chat.

Microsoft Copilot: Microsoft’s Word, Excel and PowerPoint Agents create files from a prompt and save them to OneDrive. They require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Microsoft says the side-by-side preview is read only, so detailed edits must be made in the Office app, and during the Frontier program the agents support only English (United States) as the authoring language.

In short, Gemini’s angle is editing in the chat itself across many formats, with the free tier included. Claude leans on native Office files and Copilot leans on Microsoft 365. Which is better depends on where your files already live. We have not run our own quality tests, so we make no claim about output quality.

Best use cases

Turning meeting notes or handwritten notes into a clean PDF summary.

First drafts of proposals and quotations that you then correct by hand.

Simple price sheets and comparison tables in Google Sheets.

Short slide decks for a pitch or an internal update.

Markdown or TXT content briefs for writers.

Small code snippets you want to review and tweak before using.

What it means for WordPress sites and MENA businesses

For agencies, freelancers and small companies in Egypt and the Gulf, much of daily work is documents around the website rather than the website itself. That is where this update helps.

Proposals: draft a WordPress project proposal, then fix the scope and timeline in the preview before sending it as a PDF.

Price sheets: build a service price sheet in Sheets, then check every number yourself. Do not let the model invent prices.

Reports: turn site analytics notes into a monthly client report.

Content briefs: create Markdown briefs for blog posts, then paste them into the WordPress editor.

Arabic and English: since Arabic is a supported language, you can prepare bilingual material. Google does not detail right-to-left layout handling in these files, so review Arabic PDFs and slides carefully.

A practical tip: keep sensitive client data out of prompts unless your account and company policy allow it, and always do a final human review before anything goes to a client.

If you want these documents to connect with a real site, our WordPress development team can help, or you can book a free consultation to talk through your workflow.

Related reading: Gemini 4 Carbon, Microsoft Copilot harness and Mistral Large 4.

What Google has not published yet

After checking the announcement, the Gemini Help Center, the release notes and the plans pages, these details are still not public:

A dedicated Help Center article for in-chat editing. The release notes page did not yet show an October 29 entry when we checked.

File size limits or a specific editing quota per plan.

Whether .docx and .xlsx files get the new editor.

A date for bringing non-PDF editing to mobile.

Specific notes on right-to-left Arabic layout in generated files.

Our take

This is a useful, practical step. Generating a file was only half the job, and editing it in place removes a lot of back and forth. The limits are clear: mobile is PDF only, one file per prompt, and no detailed quotas. For WordPress teams in MENA, it is a good tool for proposals, briefs and reports, as long as a human checks the final file.

Frequently asked questions

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow" id="faq-what">
What can Gemini do with files now?

Since October 29, 2026, the Gemini app can generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and more inside the chat.
