It is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex and in the OpenAI API, and AWS announced a day-one extra: the model is also generally available on Amazon Bedrock. OpenAI calls it “a significant step up from GPT-5.6 Terra”, and it launched at half the price of that older model for input tokens.

For a site owner or a business, the useful part is the mix of price and skill. GPT-6.1 Terra costs $1.00 per million input tokens and $5.00 per million output tokens in the API, yet OpenAI says it handles tasks such as reading technical drawings, filling in forms and operating a desktop. In this post we explain what changed, how the model compares with the other GPT-6 models and with Claude Opus 5.5 as OpenAI describes them, the pros and cons, the best use cases, the limits and prices, the Amazon Bedrock option, and what it means for a WordPress site. All figures come from the official OpenAI and AWS pages. The benchmark results are OpenAI’s own and have not been repeated by an independent lab.

What GPT-6.1 Terra is

OpenAI sells its GPT-6 generation as a family: GPT-6 Astra sits at the top, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Sol in the middle, GPT-6.1 Terra below them, and GPT-6 Luna as the smallest. GPT-6.1 Terra is the efficient option. OpenAI says it is built for speed and cost, while still reasoning over images and controlling a computer well enough to finish real office tasks. The API model name is
gpt-6.1-terra
.

The company gives four example jobs: drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling in forms and editing videos. AWS repeats the first two and adds investigating codebases and building agents that work across business systems. In short, this is a model aimed at everyday knowledge work and agent workflows, not only at chat.

What changed compared with GPT-5.6 Terra

OpenAI lists several gains over the previous Terra model. These are vendor-reported results, so read them as claims to test on your own work.

Computer use: on Agents’ Last Exam, a test of agents working in real software, GPT-6.1 Terra at medium reasoning effort scores 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third of the cost. OpenAI also says it is on par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth of Astra’s price per token.

Speed: OpenAI says it completes these tasks more than 3 times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Visual reasoning: on MMMU-Pro, it beats GPT-5.6 Terra at every reasoning setting and nearly matches GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. On OSWorld 2.1, a desktop-control test, it passes the best score of GPT-5.6 Terra at medium effort for a fraction of the cost per task.

Accuracy: on OpenAI’s internal benchmark of prompts designed to induce errors, the error rate at low effort fell from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7%. At max effort it fell by 18 points to 4.3%, which OpenAI says nearly matches GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Coding in the terminal: on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at max effort, it solves 50.3% of tasks, more than double the 21.5% that OpenAI published for GPT-5.6 Terra.

Writing: OpenAI says the writing is clearer and more natural. This is a qualitative claim with no number attached, so judge it by reading its output in your own language.

Where you can use it

OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and in Codex. It is also in the API as
gpt-6.1-terra
. Inside ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI says the same usage allowance covers more tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra, and substantially more than GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra. The post does not name the Business plan, the Free plan or the Go plan, so if you are on one of those, check your own account before you plan around it.

The second route is Amazon Bedrock. AWS posted on October 26, 2026 that GPT-6.1 Terra is generally available there. You can call it through the Bedrock APIs, or you can configure ChatGPT Work and Codex to use the model on Bedrock. AWS says Bedrock adds controls for access governance and for auditing model invocations. This matters for companies that already run their workloads on AWS and want one bill and one set of permissions.

GPT-6.1 Terra pricing and limits

These are the standard API rates from the OpenAI pricing page, per one million tokens. Short context means up to 272,000 input tokens, and long context means more than that.

Model

Input

Output

Cached input

Long context input

Long context output

gpt-6.1-terra

$1.00

$5.00

$0.05

$2.00

$7.50

gpt-6.1-sol

$2.00

$10.00

$0.10

$4.00

$15.00

gpt-6-astra

$10.00

$50.00

$1.00

$20.00

$75.00

gpt-6-luna

$0.10

$0.50

$0.01

$0.20

$0.75

gpt-5.6-terra (previous)

$2.00

$12.00

$0.20

$4.00

$18.00

On the same page, batch and flex processing for GPT-6.1 Terra cost $0.50 for input and $2.50 for output, while the faster Fast mode costs $2.00 and $10.00. Regional processing for data residency adds a 10% uplift for models released after March 5, 2026.

As a quick example with the standard rates, a job with 1 million input tokens and 100,000 output tokens costs about $1.50 on GPT-6.1 Terra, $3.00 on GPT-6.1 Sol, $3.20 on GPT-5.6 Terra and $15.00 on GPT-6 Astra. That is our arithmetic from the published rates, not a quote from OpenAI. For comparison, our post on Kimi K3.1 Pro lists the same job at about $3.00 on that model.

Two limits are worth knowing. First, AWS states a context window of up to 1 million input tokens on Bedrock, with text and image input. OpenAI’s launch post does not state a context size, so do not assume the same figure applies in the OpenAI API. Second, Bedrock prices are not on the AWS announcement. AWS says pricing, regions and endpoints are in the Bedrock documentation, and OpenAI says models on Bedrock are billed through that service, so check the Bedrock pricing page before you compare costs.

For a price comparison from the other side, see how Google’s Gemini 4 Carbon planned pricing compares with Terra’s listed rates.

How GPT-6.1 Terra compares with its rivals

OpenAI compares Terra with three models in its post. The numbers below are OpenAI’s, not independent tests, and the comparisons with Claude Opus 5.5 come from OpenAI, not from Anthropic.

Comparison (as reported by OpenAI)

What OpenAI says

Versus GPT-5.6 Terra, agents

15 points higher at medium effort, about one-third of the cost

Versus GPT-6 Astra, agents

On par at medium effort, one-tenth of the price per token, over 3 times faster

Versus GPT-6.1 Sol, speed and cost

Over 3 times faster, standard API price 50% lower

Versus Claude Opus 5.5, agents at max effort

Over 3 times more token efficient, one-fourth the price per token, about 9 times lower cost per task

Versus Claude Opus 5.5, Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1

Within five points at less than one-fifth of the estimated cost

The honest reading is that Terra trades a little peak ability for a lot of savings. OpenAI itself says that for the most complex coding tasks, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice, and on the one science coding test it names, Terra beats GPT-6.1 Sol but stays behind Opus 5.5 by up to five points. If you need the very best answer on a hard problem, test the bigger models. If you run thousands of routine tasks a day, Terra is the one to benchmark first. For another recent OpenAI release aimed at businesses, see our post on the OpenAI Decisions API, and for the same model family on another cloud, our post on OpenAI models on Google Cloud.

For a different kind of Microsoft AI release, see our breakdown of the Microsoft Copilot harness, which is about the runtime around a model rather than the model itself.

Safety and reliability

OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra meets the Critical threshold in cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework and keeps the safeguards that were built for GPT-6 Astra. The company also says it is more likely to stay within the scope of a task, to disclose its limits, and to resist prompt injection, which is an attack where hidden text on a web page or in a file tries to give the agent new orders. OpenAI publishes a system card for the model with the full details. For anyone who lets an agent browse the web or open documents, prompt-injection resistance is one of the most practical claims in the post, but it is still a claim, so keep human review on any action that changes data.

Pros and cons

Pros

Low price for its class: $1.00 and $5.00 per million tokens, half the input price of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Computer use and vision: OpenAI reports clear gains in agent tasks, desktop control and visual reasoning.

Speed: OpenAI reports more than 3 times faster task completion than Astra and Sol.

Fewer made-up answers: a reported drop in the error rate on OpenAI’s own tests, from 53.6% to 16.7% at low effort.

More ways to buy: the OpenAI API, ChatGPT Work, Codex and Amazon Bedrock.

Cons

Not the top model: OpenAI says Sol and Astra remain better for the most complex coding.

Vendor-reported numbers: the benchmark scores are OpenAI’s own and we found no independent results yet.

Plan limits: the launch post lists Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu only for ChatGPT Work and Codex.

Unclear context size and Bedrock price: the 1 million token window is stated by AWS only, and the Bedrock price is not on the announcement.

Arabic quality is not measured: neither page gives results for Arabic, so test it before you rely on it for Arabic content.

Best use cases

Back-office agents: filling in forms, moving data between tools and handling routine desktop steps, which is exactly where OpenAI shows its largest gains.

Documents with images: reading technical drawings, scanned invoices, screenshots and product photos.

Drafting: proposals, quotes, summaries and customer replies that need clear, natural writing.

Code investigation: AWS lists investigating codebases as a use case, which fits maintenance work on a plugin or theme.

High-volume jobs: support triage, tagging and classification, where a lower token price adds up quickly.

What it means for a WordPress site or a business

WordPress does not use GPT-6.1 Terra on its own. A developer connects it through the OpenAI API, a plugin or an automation tool, and the model is only as useful as the workflow around it. Here is how we would think about it, and each point is an idea to test, not a proven result.

Support and chat: a cheaper model with better accuracy is attractive for a site chatbot, because every visitor message costs tokens. Our guide to a WordPress AI chatbot explains how to choose one, and a model like Terra can lower the running cost if the answers hold up on your own content.

Content workflows: use Terra for first drafts, summaries and product descriptions, and keep a human editor. Google’s position on AI writing is covered in our post on AI content writing for WordPress.

Store and admin tasks: because OpenAI stresses computer use, a store owner could test an agent that checks orders, fills supplier forms or updates product data. Start with a copy of the data and a narrow task.

AWS-hosted sites: if your site or API already runs on AWS, Bedrock lets you use the model under the same account, with access governance and audit of invocations, instead of adding a new vendor.

Keys and data: keep the API key on the server, never in browser code, and send only the data a task needs. Ask your legal advisor before you send customer data to any AI provider.

Arabic content: compare Terra’s Arabic output with your current model on real pages before you switch.

If you want an AI feature like this built safely into your site, our WordPress development service can scope it, and you can book a free consultation to check whether it fits your workflow and budget.
