On 21 October 2026 (3:00 PM Cairo time), OpenAI announced that its frontier models and Codex agentic workflows are coming to Google Cloud’s Model Garden, the model catalog inside Vertex AI. Google Cloud published its own post the same day with more detail, including the first three model names and a private preview that is already rolling out to select enterprise customers. If your company already runs on Google Cloud, this changes how you can buy, govern and build with GPT models.

A few years ago, OpenAI on a cloud platform meant Microsoft Azure, and only Azure. Today the picture is wider: OpenAI models also run on Amazon Bedrock, and now Google Cloud joins the list. Microsoft, as OpenAI states plainly at the end of its announcement, remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner. So this is not a switch. It is OpenAI showing up where more enterprise customers already work.

In this post we go through what actually changed, what Google confirmed and what it did not, the pros and cons, how it compares with Azure and Bedrock, the best use cases, and what all of this means if you run a WordPress site or a business website, especially in the MENA region.

What changed: OpenAI models on Google Cloud in plain terms

Here is the short version, based only on the two official announcements from OpenAI and Google Cloud:

Where: OpenAI frontier models and Codex agentic workflows are coming to Model Garden in Vertex AI. Google’s documentation now places Model Garden under its Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform branding, but it is the same catalog developers know from Vertex AI.

Which models: Google Cloud’s post names three: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, with “more coming soon”.

Status: rolling out now in private preview to select enterprise customers. OpenAI says general availability is planned “in the coming weeks”. There is a request-access form.

How you pay: purchases go through Google Cloud Marketplace. Enterprises with Google Cloud spend commitments can draw them down with these purchases, and usage appears on a single Google Cloud invoice.

Governance: Google Cloud access controls and centralized data governance apply to OpenAI workloads, just like other models on the platform.

Coming next: OpenAI models will soon be available in Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent (Google’s post calls it Gemini for business).

Codex: Google says customers can connect their local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to its platform for inference.

That is the whole confirmed picture. Everything else in this article is analysis, and we will flag it as such.

The three models Google Cloud named

Google Cloud’s announcement describes the first OpenAI models in Model Garden this way:

GPT-6 Astra: designed for demanding work across coding, computer use, professional tasks and scientific research.

GPT-6.1 Sol: close to Astra-level intelligence at a lower cost, for agentic coding, computer use and professional work.

GPT-6 Luna: a fast, cost-efficient model for everyday work at scale.

Read that as a familiar three-tier menu: a top model for hard problems, a balanced model for most agent and coding work, and a light model for high-volume tasks like classification, summaries and support replies. The practical takeaway is that you should not default to the biggest model. Start with Luna or Sol, measure quality on your own tasks, and only move up to Astra where it clearly pays off.

What OpenAI and Google Cloud said

Greg Brockman, President and co-founder of OpenAI, called the partnership “an important step in making our most capable models and Codex available where customers are already building, giving them even more choice in how they use frontier AI”.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, framed it around choice: “We are focused on giving customers a broad selection of models, including those from OpenAI, so they can choose the right model for any given job, helping to deliver optimal quality and lower costs.”

Both quotes point to the same idea. The model is becoming one component you choose per task, and the cloud platform is where governance, billing and tooling live.

Pricing and limits: what is still unknown

Let us be direct here. Neither OpenAI nor Google Cloud has published prices for OpenAI models on Google Cloud. Neither announcement lists per-token rates, regions, rate limits, context window sizes for this offering, or a GA date beyond “the coming weeks”. We will not guess at any of them.

What we do know about cost is structural, not numeric:

Billing runs through Google Cloud Marketplace, so it lands on your existing Google Cloud invoice.

It draws down existing Google Cloud commitments, and Google says it counts toward Flexible Savings Plans across model providers.

Access is private preview for select enterprise customers right now, so most small teams cannot use it today.

On the security side, Google lists a few features as “coming soon” rather than available: Zero Data Retention options and Confidential Compute for the OpenAI models. If your compliance team needs either, wait for them to ship before moving sensitive workloads.

Pros: why this matters

One bill, one contract. For companies with a Google Cloud commitment, AI spend on GPT models can now count against money already committed. That alone can decide internal debates about which model to use.

Governance you already set up. IAM, VPC Service Controls and unified audit logging cover the OpenAI models too, according to Google. Your security team does not need to approve a new vendor path.

Data stays in the perimeter. Google says prompts, context and outputs stay within your designated data perimeter and are not used to train foundation models.

Model choice in one place. You can test GPT, Gemini and Claude side by side in the same platform and swap per task.

Codex for engineering teams. Teams on Google Cloud can point Codex workflows at the platform instead of managing a separate account.

Cons and open questions

Not generally available yet. Private preview means waiting lists and limited access.

No prices. You cannot plan budgets until pricing is published. Do not assume it will match OpenAI’s direct API pricing.

Feature parity is unclear. Neither announcement says whether every OpenAI API feature will be available on Vertex AI on day one. New features often reach a cloud partner later than the direct API.

Key features are “coming soon”. Zero Data Retention and Confidential Compute are not live yet.

Regions are not announced. For data residency in specific countries, you need to wait for the official region list.

More platform lock-in, not less. Buying everything through one cloud is convenient, but it also ties your AI stack more closely to that cloud’s billing and tooling.

How it compares: Azure, Amazon Bedrock and the rest of Vertex AI

OpenAI models are now offered through all three big cloud providers. Here is how the options line up, based on the official pages:

Option

OpenAI models

Status (21 Oct 2026)

Best fit

Azure (Microsoft Foundry)

Yes, Microsoft is OpenAI’s primary cloud partner

Available

Microsoft 365 and Azure shops

Amazon Bedrock

Yes, including GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on the Bedrock OpenAI page

Generally available on Bedrock

AWS shops, Bedrock Managed Agents

Google Cloud Vertex AI Model Garden

GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna

Private preview, GA in the coming weeks

Google Cloud shops, multi-model teams

OpenAI API directly

Full OpenAI lineup

Available

Small teams, plugins, fastest access to new features

On Vertex AI itself, OpenAI joins models that were already there. Gemini is Google’s own family, and Anthropic’s Claude models have been offered on Google Cloud for a while, with an official documentation page. Google now says it is the only hyperscale cloud provider offering access to all three leading closed-source LLM families, alongside more than 200 first-party, third-party and open models. That is Google’s own claim, but the practical point stands: on one platform you can compare GPT, Gemini and Claude without three separate contracts.

Our reading: if you are already deep in Azure or AWS, nothing here forces you to move. If you are on Google Cloud and stayed away from GPT because of procurement or governance, that blocker is about to go away.

Best use cases

Regulated industries on Google Cloud: banks, healthcare and government-adjacent teams that need audit logs and access controls they already trust.

Agentic workflows: agents that read documents, call tools and finish multi-step tasks, where you want to pick the best model per step.

Software teams using Codex: code review, refactoring and test generation, billed through the same cloud account.

Model evaluation: running the same prompts across GPT, Gemini and Claude to compare quality, speed and cost before committing.

Enterprise content: Box, quoted in Google’s post, plans to use OpenAI models through Google Cloud for AI across enterprise content.

What it means for WordPress sites and businesses

For most WordPress site owners, nothing changes this week. AI plugins for content, chat, search and SEO typically connect to the OpenAI API with an API key, and that keeps working exactly as before. The Google Cloud route is an enterprise path, and it is in private preview.

Where it does matter:

AI plugins and API keys: a plugin built for the OpenAI API will not automatically work with Vertex AI. Vertex uses Google Cloud authentication, not an OpenAI API key. Plugin developers would need to add a Google Cloud connector, or you route calls through a small middle service you control.

Agencies: if you build custom AI features for clients on Google Cloud, you can soon offer GPT models under the client’s own Google Cloud billing and governance. That is a cleaner story for procurement and for handing over projects.

MENA businesses already on GCP: companies in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt and the wider region that already run on Google Cloud can draw down existing commitments instead of opening a separate OpenAI billing account. Before you plan anything around data residency, wait for the official region list, because none has been published.

WooCommerce and lead-gen sites: product descriptions, support chat and lead qualification can run on a light model like GPT-6 Luna once it is generally available and priced. Keep the expensive models for tasks that need them.

If you want an overview of what AI can already do inside WordPress, read our guide on AI in WordPress 7. If you are planning a custom integration, our WordPress development service covers AI features connected to your stack, whether that is the OpenAI API, Google Cloud or both.

What to do now

If your company runs on Google Cloud, submit the request-access form from Google’s announcement.

List the AI tasks you run today and which model each one uses. This makes future comparison simple.

Wait for published pricing and regions before moving production workloads.

Keep your existing OpenAI API integrations running. There is no reason to migrate a working WordPress plugin setup today.

If you are unsure which route fits your business, book a free consultation and we will look at your setup with you.

FAQ

Are OpenAI models available on Google Cloud today?

Only in private preview for select enterprise customers. General availability is planned in the coming weeks, according to OpenAI.

Which OpenAI models are on Vertex AI?

Google Cloud named GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, with more coming soon.

How much does it cost to use GPT models on Google Cloud?

No prices have been published yet. Purchases go through Google Cloud Marketplace and can draw down existing Google Cloud commitments.

Does this mean OpenAI is leaving Microsoft?

No. OpenAI states that Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.

Will my WordPress AI plugin work with Vertex AI?

Not automatically. Most plugins use an OpenAI API key, while Vertex AI uses Google Cloud authentication. Keep your current setup unless the plugin adds Google Cloud support.

Is my data used to train models?

Google says prompts, context and outputs stay within your data perimeter and are not used to train foundation models.

References

OpenAI: OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud

Google Cloud Blog: Google Cloud brings OpenAI models to customers

Google Cloud Docs: Overview of Model Garden

Google Cloud Docs: Claude on Google Cloud

AWS: OpenAI models on Amazon Bedrock

Microsoft Azure: OpenAI models in Foundry

OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud Vertex AI Model Garden.
