The bigger questions are how much of the translation you trust to AI, which pages need a human who writes Arabic natively, and who checks that the menus, forms, emails and right-to-left layout all work once the words are in place. Business owners in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf often find this out after launch, when a customer screenshots a checkout button that makes no sense.

This guide compares AI translation, human translation and the hybrid approach most business sites end up using. It covers what the main WordPress translation plugins actually offer, where machine output tends to fail in Arabic, what Google says about automatically translated pages, and how to brief someone for the job. If you would rather hand the whole project over, our team can translate your WordPress site to Arabic as part of a full bilingual build, including the RTL work. The same logic works in the other direction, when you have an Arabic site and need a proper English version.

What “translating a WordPress site” really includes

Most quotes and most plugin demos focus on posts and pages. A working Arabic version needs much more than that. Before you compare tools or prices, list everything a visitor will see in Arabic:

Pages and posts. The homepage, service pages, about page, blog posts and landing pages.

Theme and plugin texts. Labels such as “Read more”, “Search results”, “Add to cart” and error messages. WPML calls these strings and handles them separately from page content.

Menus, footers and widgets. These are easy to forget because they are not edited from the page screen.

Forms. Field labels, placeholders, validation messages and the confirmation email the customer receives.

WooCommerce. Product titles and descriptions, attributes and variations, cart and checkout labels, shipping and payment method names, and order emails.

SEO fields. SEO titles, meta descriptions, URL slugs, image alt text and social sharing titles.

Media with text. Banners, infographics and PDFs with English text inside them need new versions, not just a translated caption.

Legal pages. Privacy policy, terms and refund policy. These carry legal weight, so they are the last place to rely on unchecked machine output.

On top of the words, Arabic needs a layout that reads from right to left. That is a design and development task, not a translation task, and it is often missing from translation quotes.

AI translation, human translation or both

There are three realistic ways to translate a WordPress site to Arabic. None of them is right for every page on the same site.

AI and machine translation

A translation engine produces the Arabic text, usually from inside a WordPress plugin. The main engines you will see in plugin settings are WPML’s own AI engine (PTC), DeepL, Google Cloud Translation and Microsoft Translator. Arabic appears in the supported language lists of PTC, DeepL and Google Cloud Translation.

The strengths are speed and coverage. A large catalogue, a help centre or an archive of blog posts can get a first Arabic version quickly. The weaknesses are tone, context and terminology. An engine translating one sentence at a time does not know your brand, your customers or which Arabic term your industry actually uses.

Human translation

A professional translator, or a translation agency, writes the Arabic version. Good translators adapt rather than convert: they rewrite headlines so they work in Arabic, choose the right level of formality, and flag claims that need checking. The tradeoff is time and cost, and the work still has to be entered into WordPress correctly. Plugins help here too. WPML can connect to professional translation services so translators work without logging into your site, and Polylang Pro can export content as XLIFF files for outside translators.

The hybrid approach

AI produces the first draft and a native Arabic speaker reviews and edits it before it goes live. For most business sites this is the sensible default, as long as the review is real. Sending AI output straight to “published” and planning to fix it later usually means it never gets fixed.

Approach

Best for

Main risk

What drives the cost

AI only

Large archives, internal help pages, quick drafts

Wrong tone, inconsistent terms, mistakes nobody notices

Engine or plugin usage, word count

Human only

Homepage, service pages, legal pages, ad landing pages

Slower updates when the English changes

Word count, subject complexity, deadlines

AI draft plus human review

Most business sites and WooCommerce stores

Review skipped under time pressure

Engine usage plus review hours

What the main WordPress translation plugins offer

The plugin decides how translations are stored, how AI fits into the workflow and how much of the site you can translate. These are the three options we see most on business sites, based on each vendor’s own documentation.

WPML

WPML’s recommended engine is PTC, its own AI translation engine. DeepL, Google Translate and Microsoft Translator are still available as legacy engines.

The Multilingual CMS and Multilingual Agency plans include a number of AI translation words. The Multilingual Blog plan does not include AI translation.

For DeepL, Google and Microsoft, WPML lets you choose “Wait for review”, so translations are only published after someone approves them, or “Publish and mark for review”. WPML’s own documentation recommends reviewing DeepL output before publishing.

The “Translate Everything Automatically” mode can only be switched on with PTC.

Theme and plugin texts are handled by WPML String Translation, included with Multilingual CMS and Agency.

For stores, WPML’s WooCommerce add-on covers products, variations, cart, checkout, account pages and WooCommerce emails.

WPML can also hide a language while it is still being translated, so visitors do not see a half-finished version.

Polylang

The free Polylang plugin lets you translate posts, pages, categories, menus and widgets yourself, and it supports RTL scripts. It does not include machine translation.

Polylang Pro adds machine translation with DeepL, using your own DeepL API key. Each post, page or product is translated individually; there is no one-click translation of the whole site.

Polylang’s documentation says the DeepL integration is not compatible with Elementor, Divi or the Site Editor. It works with the Classic Editor and the Block Editor.

Polylang Pro can export and import content as XLIFF for professional translators, and Polylang for WooCommerce handles store pages and customer emails.

TranslatePress

TranslatePress translates from a visual editor on the front end, so you see each sentence in place.

The free version can use the Google Translate API. Paid versions add DeepL and the TranslatePress AI engine. For Google and DeepL you need your own API key from that vendor.

Each untranslated string is machine translated once and stored in the database, and you can set a daily character limit to control API costs.

The right choice depends on your theme, your page builder, whether you run WooCommerce and who will maintain the Arabic later. A site built with Elementor, for example, should not plan on Polylang Pro’s DeepL feature for its page content.

Where AI translation goes wrong in Arabic

Machine translation into Arabic has improved a lot, but some problems keep coming back on business sites. The same applies when AI writes the original text, which is why our guide to AI content writing for WordPress explains what Google allows and where a human editor still matters. For translation, these are the ones worth checking first:

The wrong register. Marketing copy can come out stiff and formal, or mix a formal sentence with a casual one. Decide early whether your Arabic is plain Modern Standard Arabic or has a light local touch, and apply it everywhere.

Short strings without context. A button that says “Book” or “Order” can be a noun or a verb in English. An engine sees two words and guesses.

Gender and number. Arabic interface text often changes with who is being addressed. Phrases such as “you have” or “your account” need a consistent choice across the site.

Brand and product terms. Your company name, product names and service names may be translated on one page, transliterated on another and left in English on a third. A glossary prevents this.

Mixed-direction text. Arabic sentences that contain English product codes, prices or email addresses can display in the wrong order if the markup is careless.

Translated keywords nobody searches for. The literal Arabic version of your English keyword is often not what people in Cairo or Riyadh type into Google. Keyword research has to be done in Arabic, a point we cover in our guide to bilingual WordPress SEO.

Claims and numbers. Prices, guarantees, delivery times and legal terms must be checked by a person, because a small change in meaning becomes a customer service problem.

Glossaries help with the terminology problem. Google Cloud Translation and DeepL both support glossaries, and WPML says PTC applies its glossary while DeepL inside WPML does not.

What Google says about automatically translated pages

Google does not ban machine translation, but its guidance gives clear limits. Its spam policies list scaled content abuse, which includes generating many pages through automated transformations such as translating, where little value is provided to users. A full site pushed through an engine and never reviewed sits close to that line.

Google’s guidance on multilingual sites adds a few practical points:

Google uses the visible content of a page to work out its language. It does not rely on the
lang
attribute or the URL.

Use one language for the content and navigation of each page, and avoid side-by-side translations.

Translating only the template text, such as the menu and footer, while the main content stays in English creates a poor experience.

Use a different URL for each language version rather than switching the language with cookies or browser settings, and connect the versions with hreflang annotations.

That last point is why a translation widget that rewrites the page on the fly is not a real Arabic site. You need separate Arabic URLs with reviewed text that Google can crawl. The URL structure and hreflang setup are explained in detail in our bilingual SEO guide.

RTL is part of the translation job

An Arabic page with perfect text can still look broken. The W3C advises setting
dir="rtl"
on the
html
element when the whole document is right to left, using logical CSS properties such as start and end instead of left and right, and never using CSS alone to set the base direction. WordPress itself switches the page direction when the site language is Arabic, as long as the theme uses its standard language attributes, but themes and page builders often have hard-coded left and right spacing, icons that point the wrong way and sliders that run backwards.

Plan time for an RTL review on mobile and desktop: headers, menus, forms, tables, product galleries and checkout. If your current theme struggles, our guide on how to fix WordPress RTL issues walks through the common problems.

A practical workflow to translate a WordPress site to Arabic

This is the order that keeps the project under control, whether you do it in-house or hire someone:

Make a content inventory. List pages, posts, products, forms, emails, menus and media with text. Note the word count of each group.

Sort pages by risk. Pages that sell, promise or bind you legally go to a human. Supporting content can start as AI drafts.

Write a glossary and a short style guide. Brand names, service names, product terms, how you address the customer, and whether numbers appear as Western or Arabic-Indic digits.

Choose the plugin and the engine. Check compatibility with your theme, page builder and WooCommerce before buying.

Hide the Arabic version while you work, if your plugin allows it, so search engines and visitors do not find half-translated pages.

Translate the content, then the strings. Menus, widgets, form messages and emails come after the pages, and they are usually where gaps appear.

Translate the SEO fields. Write Arabic SEO titles and meta descriptions from Arabic keyword research, not as literal copies.

Run the RTL and function review. Submit every form in Arabic, place a test order, and check the emails that arrive.

Publish, then set an update routine. Decide who updates the Arabic each time the English changes, and how quickly.

Which pages deserve a human translator

Homepage and main service or category pages

Pricing, offers and anything with numbers or guarantees

Checkout, account and order email texts

Privacy policy, terms and refund policy

Landing pages used in paid ads

Blog archives, product specifications, FAQs and help articles are usually fine as AI drafts with a native review.

Checklist before the Arabic version goes live

Every page in the menu has an Arabic version, and the language switcher links each page to its own translation, not to the Arabic homepage.

No English sentences left inside Arabic pages, including buttons, placeholders and error messages.

Brand and product names match the glossary on every page.

Forms send their confirmation messages in Arabic.

WooCommerce order emails arrive in the language the customer used.

Arabic SEO titles, meta descriptions and slugs are filled in.

Hreflang tags connect each English page with its Arabic version.

The layout reads correctly from right to left on a phone.

Images with English text have Arabic replacements, and alt text is translated.

A native Arabic speaker who did not do the translation has read the main pages.

How to brief and hire for a WordPress translation project

A translation project touches content, development and SEO at the same time, so the person you hire should be able to talk about all three. These questions separate a real bilingual build from a plugin install:

Which translation plugin do you recommend for my theme and page builder, and why?

Who writes or reviews the Arabic, and is that person a native speaker?

Will you translate strings, forms, menus and emails, or only pages?

How will you test the RTL layout, and on which devices?

Will you write Arabic SEO titles and descriptions from Arabic keyword research?

Who owns the plugin licence and any API keys? They should be in your name.

What happens when I update an English page next month?

For pricing, ask for a quote broken down by the things that actually drive the cost: the number of words, the share that needs human translation, the plugin licence, any engine usage, RTL fixes to the theme and WooCommerce work. Our guides on how to hire a WordPress designer and on what a WordPress website costs in 2026 explain how to compare quotes on these points.

Common questions

Can I add a translation widget instead of translating the site?

A widget that translates the page in the visitor’s browser does not give you separate Arabic URLs with text you have reviewed. Google recommends separate URLs for each language, so a widget may help visitors read a page but it does not build an Arabic presence in search.

Should the Arabic be formal or local?

For most business sites that serve several Arab countries, Modern Standard Arabic is the safe base. A light local touch can work in marketing copy for one market, but keep it consistent and keep legal pages in standard Arabic.

Do I need to translate the whole site at once?

No. Many businesses launch the Arabic version with their key pages first and add the blog archive later. Just make sure the language switcher does not send visitors to missing pages.

What about updates after launch?

Every change to an English page needs a matching change in Arabic. Someone has to own that routine. Put it in your maintenance plan rather than leaving it to memory.

Get the Arabic version done properly

A good Arabic version is a mix of the right plugin, sensible use of AI, a native reviewer and a layout built for right-to-left reading.
