If you run an Arabic website, the question is simple: how do you become one of those sources? This guide covers what Google officially says about Google AI Overviews and Arabic websites, and what that means in practice for a WordPress site.

We’ll stick to what Google has published, because this topic is full of confident advice that nobody can actually prove.

What are AI Overviews, and are they available in Arabic?

AI Overviews are summaries that Google generates with its Gemini models at the top of some search results. They give the gist of a topic and link to pages where you can read more. Google says they appear only when its systems decide they add something beyond classic search results, so many searches don’t show one at all.

For our region, two dates matter:

20 May 2025: Google announced at I/O that AI Overviews were expanding to more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages, including Arabic. Google’s MENA blog confirmed the feature became broadly available across the Middle East and North Africa, and in Arabic globally, on mobile and desktop.

8 October 2025: Google started rolling out AI Mode, its deeper conversational search experience, in Modern Standard Arabic.

So this isn’t a future trend for Arabic sites. It’s already part of how people in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the rest of the region search.

What Google officially says about appearing in AI Overviews

Google’s Search Central guide on AI features is short and direct. The key points:

There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimization is needed.

To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.

You don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup, and there’s no special schema.org structured data to add.

Even if a page meets every requirement, Google doesn’t guarantee it will be crawled, indexed or shown.

In other words, the path into AI Overviews runs through solid, ordinary SEO. Anyone selling you a secret file or a magic plugin for AI Overviews is selling something Google says you don’t need.

How AI Overviews choose sources

Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a technique it calls query fan-out. Instead of running one search, the system runs several related searches across subtopics, then picks supporting pages for the answer. For you, that means a page that covers a topic thoroughly, including the related questions people ask around it, has more chances to match one of those searches.

Getting Google AI Overviews to pick up Arabic websites: a practical checklist

1. Make sure Google can crawl and index your pages

Check that
robots.txt
doesn’t block important pages, and that your CDN or firewall isn’t blocking Googlebot. Google lists this explicitly.

Make sure the pages you care about aren’t set to noindex by mistake. This happens more often than you’d think after moving a site from staging to live.

Submit your XML sitemap in Google Search Console and check the page indexing report regularly.

2. Don’t block snippets on pages you want cited

Google says the controls that limit what appears from your pages in Search, such as
nosnippet
,
data-nosnippet
,
max-snippet
and
noindex
, also apply to AI features. That’s useful if you want to keep certain content out, but check that your SEO plugin isn’t adding a snippet restriction to pages you actually want to be quoted.

3. Write people-first Arabic content

Google keeps pointing to helpful, reliable, people-first content. For an Arabic site, that means a few specific things:

Write in Arabic, don’t paste a machine translation. Arabic readers notice stiff, translated text immediately, and it rarely answers their questions the way they phrase them.

Answer the question early. Put a clear, direct answer near the top, then go into detail.

Cover the surrounding questions. Think about what someone would ask next, and answer it on the same page or on a linked page.

Show experience. Real steps, real screenshots and real examples from your work make a page more useful than a generic summary.

Keep the important content as text. Google notes that important content should be available in textual form, so don’t hide key information inside images.

4. Structure pages clearly

Use one H1, clear H2 and H3 headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables where they help. Clear structure helps readers first, and it also makes it easier for search systems to understand which part of the page answers which question.

5. Use structured data honestly

There’s no special schema for AI Overviews, but Google asks that your structured data matches the visible text on the page. Article, Organization, Product and FAQ markup from your SEO plugin is fine, as long as it describes what’s actually on the page.

6. Link your content together

Google mentions making content easy to find through internal links. Link related posts to each other and to your service pages. For example, if you write about AI and WordPress, link to a cornerstone guide like our article on AI in WordPress 7.0.

7. Give visitors a good page experience

Fast loading, a stable layout and a site that works well on mobile are part of the fundamentals Google lists. For Arabic sites, that includes correct right-to-left layout and Arabic fonts that load quickly without shifting the page.

WordPress settings worth reviewing

Most WordPress sites rely on an SEO plugin such as SEOPress, Yoast or Rank Math, and these plugins control a lot of what makes your pages eligible. Review these points at least once:

The “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” option under Settings, then Reading. It’s often turned on during development and forgotten after launch, which hides the whole site from search.

Indexing settings for each content type in your SEO plugin, such as posts, pages, categories and tags. Make sure important content is indexed and thin or duplicate pages are excluded.

The XML sitemap your plugin generates, and that it includes both the Arabic and English pages.

The title and meta description of each page, written in the page’s language and phrased to answer the searcher’s question.

Bilingual sites: Arabic and English together

Many sites in the region publish in both languages, like this one. We cover the full setup in our guide to SEO for bilingual Arabic and English WordPress sites, but a few points keep the two versions from competing with each other:

Use a proper multilingual setup such as WPML or Polylang, which adds hreflang tags so Google knows which page is for which language.

Give each language its own URL, for example
/ar/
and
/en/
, instead of switching languages on the same URL with cookies or scripts.

Adapt, don’t translate word for word. Arabic searchers phrase questions differently, and sometimes use English terms for technical topics. Write for how people actually search in each language.

Set Arabic titles and meta descriptions separately in your SEO plugin instead of leaving the English ones on the Arabic pages.

How to measure your presence in AI Overviews

Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in your overall search traffic in Search Console, inside the Performance report under the Web search type. There isn’t a separate AI Overviews report, so look at the bigger picture:

Watch impressions and clicks for informational queries, especially questions.

Compare pages, not just the whole site, to see which content gains or loses visibility.

Track engagement and conversions in Google Analytics. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with visitors spending more time on the site.

What doesn’t help

Common idea

What Google says

You need a special AI text file

No new machine-readable or AI text files are needed

There’s a secret schema for AI Overviews

No special schema.org markup is required

Meeting all requirements guarantees a citation

Crawling, indexing and serving aren’t guaranteed

AI Overviews ignore classic SEO

The same SEO fundamentals apply

If you want to keep certain content out of AI features, the controls are robots.txt for Googlebot, plus the snippet and noindex controls mentioned above. Google also has a separate control called Google-Extended for limiting use in some of its other AI systems, but it isn’t the control for AI Overviews in Search.

A simple plan for the next month

Verify your site in Search Console if you haven’t already, and fix any indexing errors.

Pick your ten most important Arabic pages and check that each one answers its main question clearly near the top.

Add the related questions people ask, with short, direct answers.

Review titles, meta descriptions and internal links in both languages.

Check speed and mobile layout on the same pages.

Review the Performance report after a few weeks, page by page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay or apply to appear in AI Overviews?

No. There’s no application and no paid placement for supporting links. Ads appear in their own dedicated slots.

Does writing in Modern Standard Arabic matter?

Write in the Arabic your readers use and search with. For most informational topics that means clear Modern Standard Arabic, with a natural tone that doesn’t feel stiff.

Will AI Overviews reduce my traffic?

It depends on the query and the page. The honest answer is to measure your own pages in Search Console rather than rely on general claims.

Do I need to rebuild my whole site for AI Overviews?

No. Start with your most important pages and improve them one by one. The same improvements that help with AI Overviews also help your regular rankings, so the effort pays off either way.

How long until new content can appear in AI Overviews?

There’s no fixed timeline. The page has to be crawled and indexed first, and then Google decides when it’s a useful source for a given question. Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to confirm the page is indexed, and focus on improving the content itself rather than waiting for a quick result.

A final word

There’s no shortcut into AI Overviews, and that’s good news for sites that do the work.
